Serial number management for Lexmark toner cartridge
Serial number(Abbreviation as SN) management,two conditions need to be met:
1. Toner cartridge manufacturers must place proper SN markers on both the product and its outer packaging;
2. Resellers must register the serial numbers of the units they ship to end-users. If an end-user owns multiple devices, they must also cooperate by keeping records of the SNs used on each individual device.
Take Lexmark CS331 as example,if we have 10 groups SN for BK(SNK1.SNK2....SNK10),end user A has a CS331 printer,each month used up one BK cartridges.
Jan. send SNK1 to him,Feb send SNK2....Oct send SNK10,just as this way,then 10 months later,we have new SN increased.
History:
SN management was first used on ink cartridges. Early inkjet printers only stored one serial number. For example, if SN A was used first, the printer would throw an error when A was used again.
At this point, SN B was required, and the printer would then replace A with B. For the third use, SN A could be reused.
With this SN management method, only two sets of SNs were needed to enable infinite cycling of A→B→A→B......
Later, the original manufacturer found this bug and increased the printer's memory, allowing it to store a large number of serial numbers—possibly 100 or even 500,
which not only increased the frequency of SN conflict errors for compatible consumables but also multiplied the development costs.
This forced compatible toner chip manufactuers to constantly generate and add new serial numbers,.
